The Candidacy Consult, Itemized
Here is what the deciding appointment actually contains, so you can weigh it against the free-consult flyers in your mailbox. A full clinical exam of every tooth and your gum health. Digital X-rays, and a 3D Cone Beam scan when bone volume or implant questions are in play. A chairside review of the images with Dr. Rainford, in plain English, where you see what he sees. Then the written plan: each viable option, each fee, side by side.
Two things the consult never contains: pressure and vagueness. You take the document home, compare it against any other quote in your drawer, and decide on your own schedule. Patients who arrive with records from a previous dentist can have them transferred with a signature, and fresh imaging still gets taken so the decision rests on your mouth today rather than a file from three years ago.
The Four Profiles That Do Best With Dentures
Profile one: an arch where most or all teeth are failing, from decay, fracture, or advanced gum disease. A full denture rebuilds the arch, the bite, and the facial support in one appliance, without surgery. Profile two: scattered missing teeth with healthy neighbors. A removable partial fills the gaps and anchors to the sound teeth, protecting them from drifting into the spaces. Profile three: the patient losing teeth in stages, for whom a transitional denture bridges the months between extractions and the final restoration.
Profile four is the immediate-denture candidate: the patient whose remaining teeth must come out but whose work and social life cannot absorb a toothless healing period. The denture is fabricated in advance and placed the day of extraction, then relined as the ridge heals. Plenty of Vinings professionals fit this profile precisely because their calendars leave no room for the conventional timeline.
When Something Else Serves You Better
Candidacy runs both directions, and three findings point away from a standard denture. First, anchor teeth too weak for a partial: loading a loose tooth with clasp pressure accelerates its failure, so the plan reroutes to a full denture or implant support instead. Second, a ridge flattened by years of previous denture wear: when bone has resorbed enough, no conventional denture will seat stably, and implant anchorage becomes the fix rather than the upgrade. Third, teeth that look hopeless but are savable: when a root canal and crown cost less than extraction plus replacement, saving the tooth is the recommendation you will hear.
Health history also gets a vote. Conditions and medications that affect healing shape the extraction plan, and they get reviewed before anything is scheduled, coordinated with your physician where needed. None of these findings ends the conversation; each redirects it, and every redirect happens inside this same office rather than through a referral chain. For Vinings patients used to being handed off between Buckhead specialists, keeping the whole decision tree under one roof is usually the first pleasant surprise of the process.

A Dentist Who Tells You No When No Is the Answer
Dr. Chea Rainford, DMD, is a member of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, holds Fellowship status with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, and has practiced in Georgia for over fifteen years since earning his doctorate at The Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry. The esthetics training shapes how a full-arch case supports your face; the implant fellowship means the alternative to a denture, when the evidence points there, is evaluated by the same doctor in the same chair.
The practice commitment that matters most to candidacy patients is written into how visits end: you will never leave without knowing all your treatment options and their fee estimates, and you will always be heard. A recommendation you can take home on paper is a recommendation you can trust.

Vinings Candidacy Questions
I am only missing a few teeth. Is a full denture overkill for me?
A: Almost certainly, yes. With healthy remaining teeth, a removable partial protects what you have and costs less, and extracting sound teeth to simplify an appliance is the kind of recommendation you should walk away from. The exam confirms your anchor teeth are solid, and the partial gets designed around them.
Will implant options be discussed at the same consultation, or is this a dentures-only office?
A: Same consultation, same doctor. Dr. Rainford holds FICOI implant credentials and plans cases on an in-office 3D Cone Beam scanner, so if your ridge or your priorities point toward implant support, that path gets priced and explained alongside the denture options in one written plan.
I am in my fifties. Am I too young for dentures?
A: Age is not the criterion; the condition of your teeth is. Fracture patterns, decay history, and gum disease decide candidacy, and patients decades apart in age can share the same clinical picture. If your teeth are failing, treating that reality early protects bone and beats years of patchwork repairs.
Years of wearing an old denture flattened my ridge. Does that rule me out for a better fit?
A: It rules out repeating the past, and it opens a better route. A resorbed ridge often will not hold a conventional denture stably, and implant anchorage solves exactly that problem while stopping further bone loss. The Cone Beam scan measures your remaining bone and gives you a firm answer at the planning visit.
My longtime Vinings dentist retired. Can you work from my old records?
A: Yes. Sign a release and the team will request your records, X-rays, and treatment history from the prior office. Fresh imaging still gets taken here so candidacy decisions rest on your mouth today, and your history fills in the context behind it.
