How Dr. Rainford Approaches "Gentle" Dentistry
"Gentle dentistry" is not a procedure. It is an approach to every procedure. Here is what that looks like in practice at Vibrant Smiles.
First, we listen before we look. Your first appointment is not a high-pressure sales pitch for a treatment plan. It is a conversation. Dr. Rainford asks what brought you in, what has gone wrong in past dental visits, and what you want out of this one. Then he examines you.
Second, we explain before we treat. You will not be told "you need a crown" and then sent to the front desk for a quote. Dr. Rainford will show you the X-ray, point to the problem, and tell you what the options are, including the option to do nothing for now.
Third, we manage pain proactively, not reactively. We use the STA Single Tooth Anesthesia system, which delivers numbing medicine slowly and steadily through a wand-style device instead of a traditional syringe. Most patients say the injection feels like pressure, not a pinch. We also use a topical anesthetic gel before any numbing shot.
What Happens at Your First Visit
A typical first visit at Vibrant Smiles runs 45 to 60 minutes. We do a full exam, take digital X-rays (much lower radiation than older film X-rays), and walk you through what we see. If you need cleaning during that same visit, we will do it then. If you need more involved work, we book a second appointment and give you a written estimate before you leave.
If you are nervous, tell us. We can do the exam without X-rays on the first day. We can take breaks. We can stop at any point. None of that costs extra and none of it changes how we treat you.
Sedation Options
If anxiety is the reason you have stayed away from the dentist, Vibrant Smiles offers nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. Dr. Rainford holds the Georgia permit required for IV sedation and matches the tier to the work, not the other way around.
For costs, insurance coverage, and how to pick the right tier, see our sedation dentistry cost guide at vibrantsmilesga.com/sedation-dentistry-in-mableton-ga/.
Technology That Reduces Discomfort
A few of the tools we use, in plain English:
- Digital X-rays use far less radiation than the film X-rays you may remember from childhood. We can also take them more quickly and review them with you on a screen instead of holding up tiny films.
- The STA wand delivers anesthetic at a controlled rate, which is the main reason patients say injections at our office feel different.
- Our soft-tissue laser handles some procedures that used to require a scalpel and stitches. Healing is usually faster and less painful.
- A 3D Conebeam scanner gives us a complete view of your jaw and tooth structure when we plan implants or evaluate complicated cases. The scan takes about 20 seconds.

For larger treatment plans (implants, full-mouth restoration, cosmetic work), we offer patient financing with monthly payments. We will walk through the options with you before any work begins.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you treat patients with severe dental anxiety?
Yes. A meaningful share of our patients come to us specifically because past dental visits have been hard. We offer nitrous sedation, longer appointments when needed, and a no-pressure approach to treatment planning.
Do I need a referral to come to your office?
No. You can call (678) 810-1100 or use the contact form to book a first visit directly.
What if I have not been to a dentist in years?
That is the most common situation we see. The first visit is an exam and a conversation. We will tell you what we see, prioritize the most important treatment, and let you decide on a pace that works for you.
Do you take my insurance?
Probably. We are in-network with most major PPO plans. Call the office or fill out the contact form with your insurance information and we will verify your coverage before your appointment.
How do I get to your office from Austell?
East-West Connector east to Floyd Road, then north on Floyd Road. The office is at 5015 Floyd Road SW, Suite 530. The drive from most Austell zip codes is 10 to 15 minutes.
