Our office sits about five miles east of Austell on Floyd Road in Mableton, an easy drive via the East-West Connector.
When You Need a Tooth Pulled in Austell
A tooth extraction may be the right call when a tooth is too damaged to save with a filling, crown, or root canal. Common reasons include:
- Deep decay that has destroyed the tooth structure
- A fracture that runs below the gumline
- Infection that has not responded to root canal treatment
- Advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth
- Wisdom teeth that are impacted, crowding other teeth, or repeatedly getting infected
- Baby teeth that will not come out on their own
- Teeth that need to be removed before braces or dentures
Dr. Rainford reviews your X-rays, listens to your symptoms, and discusses every option before recommending an extraction. If there is a way to save the tooth, we tell you. If removal is the safer path, we explain why and walk you through what comes next.
Meet Dr. Chea Rainford

Dr. Rainford has practiced dentistry in Georgia for over 15 years. He earned his Doctor of Medical Dentistry (DMD) from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry after completing his undergraduate work in chemistry at the University of West Georgia. His post-graduate training covers prosthodontics, orthodontics, periodontics, and endodontics, the four specialty areas most relevant to extractions. They cover how a removed tooth affects the bite, the gums, the root canal system, and your future replacement options.

The FICOI Fellowship matters specifically for extractions because of bone preservation and implant planning. When a tooth comes out, the way it is removed affects the bone underneath. If you are likely to want an implant later, Dr. Rainford's implant training means that preservation can be planned at the time of the extraction, not as a separate later surgery.
Simple Extractions and Surgical Extractions
A simple extraction is used when the tooth is visible above the gumline and can be loosened and removed with hand instruments. You are numbed with local anesthesia, the tooth is gently rocked free, and you go home with aftercare instructions. Most simple extractions are done in 30 to 45 minutes.
A surgical extraction is used when a tooth is broken at the gumline, fully or partially impacted, or has roots that are likely to break during removal. The dentist may need to make a small incision in the gum or section the tooth to remove it in pieces. This is most common with wisdom teeth and teeth with badly fractured roots. Surgical extractions usually take an hour or more.
Our office uses digital X-rays, intraoral cameras, and 3D cone beam imaging when needed to plan the procedure. The 3D scans are especially useful before surgical removal of impacted wisdom teeth, where the position of the nerve in your lower jaw matters and standard X-rays do not give a full picture.
Comfort and Sedation Options During Your Visit
Most patients tell us they are anxious about extractions. We have several ways to help:
- Local anesthesiais included with every extraction. The area is fully numb before we start. If you feel anything sharp during the procedure, you tell us, and we add more numbing.
- Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)is available if you want to feel relaxed but stay awake. The effect wears off quickly so you can drive yourself home.
- Oral sedationis an option for patients with stronger anxiety or for longer surgical extractions. Oral sedation does require someone to drive you home.
Comfort during the procedure is part of the visit, not an upgrade. You will not be asked to push through pain.
What to Expect After the Extraction
You leave with written aftercare instructions and a follow-up plan. The first 24 hours are the most important because that is when the blood clot forms in the socket. The aftercare covers:
- Managing bleeding and swelling (gauze pressure, ice on the cheek)
- What you can and cannot eat for the first day: soft, cool foods like yogurt, applesauce, smoothies. No straws (sucking can dislodge the clot)
- When to take pain medication
- How to clean around the area without disturbing the clot
- Signs of dry socket and infection to watch for
- When to call us if something feels off
Most patients are back to normal eating within a week. Wisdom tooth surgical extractions usually need a few extra days of soft-food eating. We check in on how healing is going, and you can call us anytime during business hours if a question comes up.
Planning for Tooth Replacement
If the extracted tooth is one you will want to replace, we talk about your options before the day of the extraction. The choices typically include:
- Dental implant: a titanium post placed in the jawbone that holds a crown. Functions like a natural tooth. Best for visible teeth and teeth that carry your bite.
- Bridge: a crown attached to the teeth on either side of the gap. Works well when the neighboring teeth could also use crowns.
- Partial denture: a removable replacement for one or more missing teeth in a row. Less expensive than implants.
- Full denture: used when many teeth in an arch are being removed.
Sometimes a bone graft is placed at the time of the extraction to preserve the socket for a future implant. This planning happens before extraction day so the right steps are taken at the right time. Because Dr. Rainford handles both extractions and implants here in one office, you do not have to coordinate between separate providers.

Tooth Extraction FAQs
Can I get a same-day tooth extraction in Austell?
Often yes. We offer same-day emergency appointments for patients in active tooth pain. Call (678) 810-1100 first thing in the morning and our team will work to fit you in. The office is about a 10-minute drive east from most of Austell via the East-West Connector.
Will the extraction hurt?
You feel pressure but not pain. Dr. Rainford numbs the area fully with local anesthesia before starting. If you feel anything sharp during the procedure, we add more numbing. Soreness after the numbing wears off is normal and usually manages well with over-the-counter pain medication.
How much does a tooth extraction cost without insurance?
Cost depends on whether the extraction is simple or surgical and whether sedation is added. The $129 New Patient Promotion covers a full exam, full digital X-rays, and oral cancer screening, which is the first step before a quoted extraction price. CareCredit financing and the Friends & Family Membership Plan are both options for patients without insurance.
How long does the appointment take?
A simple extraction usually takes 30 to 45 minutes from start to finish. A surgical extraction or wisdom tooth removal takes longer, often an hour or more. We block enough time so we are not rushing.
When can I eat normally after the extraction?
For the first 24 hours, stick to soft, cool foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies (no straws), and lukewarm soup. Most patients are back to regular eating within a week. Wisdom tooth surgical extractions usually need a few extra days of soft-food eating.
