Clarkdale is a small community within Austell, and Vibrant Smiles Family & Cosmetic Dentistry serves it like a neighborhood practice. Dr. Chea Rainford and our team know many of our Clarkdale patients by name. We see whole families, multiple generations, and we plan extractions around the rhythms of how people actually live here. The office is about a 10-minute drive east of Clarkdale via the East-West Connector.

A Family Dentist for the Clarkdale Community

Clarkdale started as a mill village and still has that close-knit feel. The reason this matters for a dental page: when you choose a dentist for an extraction, you are choosing someone who is going to remember you, follow up on how the healing went, and be there for the next appointment too. We treat extractions as one visit inside a longer relationship, not as a standalone transaction.

Families from Clarkdale often come to us for a mix of needs in the same week: a parent's wisdom tooth follow-up, a teen's orthodontic-prep extraction, a grandparent's denture planning. Knowing the family makes the care better.

Common Reasons to Have a Tooth Removed

  • Decay or fracture too extensive for a filling or crown to repair
  • Infection that has not resolved with root canal treatment
  • Advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth
  • Wisdom teeth that are impacted or causing crowding
  • Baby teeth that are not falling out and are blocking permanent teeth
  • Teeth being removed by plan before braces or dentures

Dr. Rainford reviews your X-rays and walks you through the diagnosis in clear language. We work to save teeth when saving them makes sense. If extraction is the safer path, you hear why before any decision is made.

Simple and Surgical Tooth Extractions

A simple extraction is used when the tooth is visible above the gum and can be loosened with hand instruments. You are numbed with local anesthesia, the tooth is gently rocked free, and you go home with aftercare instructions. Most simple extractions take 30 to 45 minutes.

A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is broken at the gumline, fully or partially impacted, or has roots that are likely to break during removal. The dentist may make a small incision in the gum or section the tooth to remove it in pieces. Surgical extractions take about an hour or more.

Digital X-rays show us the basics of root shape and bone level. For complex cases, 3D cone beam imaging gives a three-dimensional view that helps map nerve position and root structure. Intraoral cameras let you see what we see, which helps when we are explaining why a tooth needs to come out.

Sedation, Numbing, and Comfort During Your Visit

We do not start until the area is fully numb. If you feel anything sharp during the procedure, you tell us and we add more anesthetic.

For patients who feel anxious or for longer procedures, two additional comfort options are available:

  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas): breathed through a small mask. You feel relaxed but stay awake. The effect wears off in minutes so you can drive yourself home.
  • Oral sedation: a prescription pill taken before the appointment. Deeper relaxation. You stay conscious but remember little of the procedure. Requires a driver home.

Recovery and Aftercare

Most simple extractions heal at the gum level within 7 to 10 days. The bone underneath continues to fill in for several weeks. Surgical extractions add a few days of more careful recovery.

Things to do:

  • Bite on gauze with steady pressure for 30 to 45 minutes after leaving the office
  • Apply ice to the cheek on the side of the extraction for the first 24 hours
  • Eat soft, cool foods: yogurt, smoothies (no straw), applesauce, lukewarm soup
  • Take pain medication as directed (usually over-the-counter ibuprofen and acetaminophen)
  • Start light salt-water rinses 24 hours after the extraction

Things to avoid:

  • Straws, smoking, vigorous rinsing, and spitting for the first 24 hours (these can dislodge the blood clot)
  • Hot drinks or hot foods on the first day
  • Strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours

Call us if: bleeding is heavy past the first few hours, severe pain starts 3 to 5 days after (possible dry socket), you develop a fever, or you notice a foul taste.

Tooth Extraction FAQs

Is Clarkdale considered part of Austell?

Yes. Clarkdale is a community within the City of Austell in Cobb County. Many Clarkdale residents use Austell as their mailing address. Our office in Mableton is about a 10-minute drive east via the East-West Connector and serves both Clarkdale and the broader Austell area.

Can my whole family use the Friends & Family Membership Plan?

Yes. The plan is designed for patients without traditional dental insurance and covers preventive care (cleanings, exams, routine X-rays) at no extra charge for the year, plus discounts on procedures including extractions. Multiple family members can be added. There are no waiting periods, deductibles, or annual maximums. Call (678) 810-1100 for details and pricing.

Will my child need to have a baby tooth pulled?

Most baby teeth come out on their own as the permanent tooth pushes them out. A baby tooth sometimes needs to be removed by a dentist when it is loose but stuck, when it is causing pain or infection, when the permanent tooth is coming in behind it (a shark tooth situation), or when an orthodontist recommends removal for crowding. We see children for extractions and adjust our approach to keep visits calm for younger patients.

What is the difference between a routine and a surgical extraction?

A routine (or simple) extraction is used when the tooth is fully visible above the gum and can be loosened with hand instruments. A surgical extraction is used when the tooth is broken at the gumline, partially or fully impacted, or has complicated roots. Surgical extractions may require a small incision in the gum or sectioning of the tooth. Dr. Rainford reviews your X-ray and tells you which approach is needed before the visit.

How long should I plan for the appointment?

Plan on about an hour for a simple extraction (about 30 to 45 minutes of actual treatment plus check-in, anesthesia, and aftercare instructions). Surgical extractions or wisdom tooth removal can take 90 minutes or more. We block enough time so the visit is not rushed.
