Serving Families Across West Cobb

West Cobb County is not a single city. It is a region that covers parts of Powder Springs, Marietta, Acworth, Kennesaw, Austell, and several unincorporated areas. The drive to our Mableton office varies based on where you start, but for most West Cobb communities, the trip is 15 to 30 minutes via the East-West Connector or Powder Springs Road. We schedule appointments to fit the longer drive, often grouping multiple family visits on the same day to save you trips.

West Cobb Communities We See Patients From

  • Powder Springs and the Powder Springs Road corridor
  • The Lost Mountain Park area west of Marietta
  • Western Marietta neighborhoods south of Dallas Highway
  • Kennesaw south of Wade Green Road
  • Acworth's southern neighborhoods
  • Hiram and the surrounding area
  • The Brownsville Road / South Sweetwater area of Austell

When a Tooth Needs to Be Removed

We work to save teeth when saving them makes sense. We recommend extraction when:

  • The tooth is broken or decayed past what a crown can repair
  • A root canal has failed or is not a realistic option
  • A vertical root fracture has split the tooth below the gumline
  • Advanced gum disease has destroyed the bone around the tooth
  • A wisdom tooth is impacted or causing crowding
  • Orthodontic treatment requires extra room
  • A tooth is being removed by plan to make room for dentures or implants

Dr. Rainford walks through the diagnosis in plain English and shows you what he sees on the X-ray and on the intraoral camera. You hear the reasoning. If saving the tooth is realistic, we say so. If not, we explain what comes next.

Dr. Rainford has practiced dentistry in Georgia for over 15 years. He earned his Doctor of Medical Dentistry (DMD) from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry after his undergraduate work at the University of West Georgia. His post-graduate training spans prosthodontics, orthodontics, periodontics, and endodontics, which is to say his training covers how a removed tooth affects the bite, the gums, the root canal system, and the future replacement.

He holds Fellowship status with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (FICOI), the relevant credential for implant work. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the Georgia Dental Association, the North Georgia Dental Society, the Hinman Dental Society, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, and he is a lifetime member of the American Orthodontic Society.

How We Plan and Perform Extractions

Most West Cobb patients we see for extractions have one of three situations: an adult tooth that has been hurting for a while, a wisdom tooth that needs to come out, or planned removal before braces or dentures. Our process is the same for all three:

  • Diagnosis. Digital X-rays. Intraoral camera images. A medical history review. A discussion of symptoms.
  • Planning. If the extraction is straightforward (simple), we book it. If the case is complex (impacted tooth, root fracture, planned implant follow-up), we may add a 3D cone beam scan to map the roots and the bone before extraction day.
  • Sedation choice. Local anesthesia is included. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are options.
  • The procedure. 30 to 45 minutes for a simple extraction. An hour or more for surgical extractions and wisdom teeth.
  • Aftercare. Written instructions, a follow-up call, and an open phone line for questions.

Comfort and Sedation Options

Three levels of comfort are available:

  • Local anesthesia (included): the area is fully numb. We do not start until it is.
  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas): relaxed but awake. Wears off in minutes. You can drive yourself home.
  • Oral sedation: take a prescription pill before the appointment. Deeply relaxed but conscious. Requires a driver home and someone with you for several hours after.

There is no upcharge for being numbed fully. Sedation has a separate fee.

Recovery and Aftercare

Most simple extractions heal in 7 to 10 days at the gum level. Surgical extractions and wisdom teeth take a few extra days. Important parts of recovery:

  • Soft, cool food for the first 24 hours: yogurt, smoothies (no straw), applesauce, lukewarm soup
  • No straws, no smoking, no vigorous rinsing for the first 24 hours. These can dislodge the blood clot in the socket.
  • Ice on the cheek the first day to control swelling. Warm compresses after the first day.
  • Salt-water rinses starting day two
  • Pain medication as needed, usually over-the-counter ibuprofen and acetaminophen alternating
  • Call us about: heavy bleeding past day one, severe pain starting on day three to five (possible dry socket), fever, or a bad taste

Tooth Replacement Options After an Extraction

If the extracted tooth needs to be replaced, we plan the replacement before the extraction. The main options:

  • Dental implant: closest to a natural tooth. Best for visible teeth and load-bearing molars.
  • Bridge: a row of crowns spanning the gap. Anchored to the teeth on each side.
  • Partial denture: removable. Less expensive than implants. Useful when several teeth in a row are missing.
  • Bone graft at the time of extraction: protects the bone for a future implant. Often the right call for visible teeth and molars where implants are planned.

Tooth Extraction FAQs for West Cobb Patients

How far is Vibrant Smiles from West Cobb communities?

From Powder Springs, the drive is about 15 to 20 minutes via the East-West Connector. From the Lost Mountain area, about 20 to 25 minutes. From Marietta heading south, plan on 20 to 30 minutes depending on which part of Marietta. From the Vinings and Smyrna side of West Cobb, the drive is about 10 to 15 minutes.

Can you see our whole family for tooth removal?

Yes. We are a family practice and see patients across all ages, from children needing baby teeth removed to grandparents needing extractions before dentures. Families often book back-to-back appointments so they can come in together. The Friends & Family Membership Plan covers multiple family members under one plan if you do not have insurance.

How far in advance should I book for a planned extraction?

For non-emergency extractions, we can usually book within one to two weeks. For wisdom tooth removal that needs coordination with the school year or other timing, book earlier. Patients often plan summer or winter break removals 4 to 6 weeks ahead. For active tooth pain, call (678) 810-1100 in the morning and we will work to fit you in the same day.

Do you offer payment plans for larger procedures?

Yes. CareCredit healthcare financing is available with interest-free monthly payments (subject to approval). The Friends & Family Membership Plan is another option for patients without traditional dental insurance. We file PPO insurance claims directly and help you understand your out-of-pocket cost before treatment.

What happens at a tooth extraction consultation?

You come in for a full exam, a digital X-ray review, and a discussion of your symptoms. Dr. Rainford evaluates whether the tooth can be saved with a root canal, crown, or other treatment, or whether extraction is the better path. If extraction is recommended, you get a clear plan, sedation options, cost estimate, and aftercare. The $129 New Patient Promotion covers this entire first visit for patients without insurance.
