What porcelain veneers do, and what they don't
Porcelain veneers are thin custom shells bonded to the front of the teeth. Each one is shaped, shaded, and sized for your face and bite. The result, when planned well, looks like the smile you would have had naturally if every tooth had landed exactly where you wanted it.
Veneers handle the cosmetic problems patients most often want fixed:
- Discoloration that whitening cannot resolve
- Chips, cracks, or worn-down edges
- Slightly crooked or unevenly sized teeth
- Teeth that read as too small for the face
- Visible gaps you want closed
Veneers are not the answer when a tooth needs structural repair (a crown serves the case better), when there is active decay or gum disease (treat that first), or when a patient is still growing. The screening visit is where these calls get made.
Porcelain vs. composite: how to choose
Porcelain is lab-fabricated, photograph-natural, stain-resistant, and lasts 10 to 15 years on average. It costs more upfront and is placed across two visits. Composite is built up directly on the tooth in one appointment, costs less, and is reversible, but it picks up stains over the years and gets replaced every 5 to 7 years.
Most Vinings patients who are committing to a full smile makeover choose porcelain. The longer service life, photo-natural appearance, and stain resistance fit the use case. Composite is a strong fit when the goal is a single-tooth fix or when the patient is younger and may want flexibility down the line.

Our process
Two appointments, roughly two to three weeks apart.
Visit 1: design and prep
Photos, a 3D scan from our 3M True Definition scanner, and a thorough conversation about what you want. By the end of the visit we have settled shape, size, and shade, your teeth are prepared (about 0.5 mm of enamel removed), temporaries are placed, and the prescription is on its way to our lab.
Visit 2: placement
Temporaries come off, the final porcelain veneers are checked for fit and color, and we bond them one at a time. We adjust the bite, polish, and confirm comfort before you leave. Most patients walk out with the final smile in this visit.

Dr. Chea Rainford has practiced dentistry in the state of Georgia for over 15 years. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, with a minor in Biology, from the University of West Georgia, then his Doctorate of Medical Dentistry (D.M.D.) from The Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry in Augusta. His post-graduate training spans prosthodontics, orthodontics, periodontics, and endodontics, which gives him the case range to plan and execute most cosmetic and restorative work in-house.
Memberships and recognitions: American Dental Association, Georgia Dental Association, North Georgia Dental Society, Academy of General Dentistry, Hinman Dental Society, American Academy of Facial Esthetics. How long do porcelain veneers last?
Porcelain veneers typically last 10 to 15 years with proper care. Some patients keep theirs longer. A nightguard is recommended if you grind.
Are veneers permanent?
Porcelain veneers are considered permanent because a thin layer of enamel is removed to bond them. The veneer can be replaced when it wears out, but the original enamel cannot be restored. We make sure you understand the trade-off before any prep work begins.
Do veneers ruin natural teeth?
When done properly, no. The 0.5 mm of enamel removed during prep is offset by the protection the veneer provides. The risk comes from poor case planning, poor bonding, or treating veneers as a quick fix when there are underlying issues. Screening prevents that.
