Smile Safety for Active Kids

Active kids need protection, not just for their bodies but also for their smiles. While helmets, pads, and goggles are standard gear for many sports, a mouthguard is just as essential for protecting your child’s teeth, tongue, lips, and jaw during physical activity.

Mouthguards are especially important in contact sports like football, hockey, and boxing, where facial impacts are common. But don’t overlook them for non-contact activities like gymnastics, skateboarding, mountain biking, or rollerblading—accidents can still happen, and a mouthguard can prevent serious dental injuries.

Using a mouthguard is even more critical for children with braces or other dental appliances. It helps cushion the impact and prevents damage to orthodontic work or injury to the soft tissues of the mouth.

Choosing the Right Mouthguard

There are three main types of mouthguards available, and your child’s dentist can help you decide which one is best:

  • Stock Mouthguards: These pre-formed options are widely available at sporting goods stores. However, they offer a one-size-fits-all approach and typically provide the least amount of comfort and protection. Most dentists don’t recommend them due to their poor fit and limited coverage.

  • Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards: These guards are softened in hot water and then molded to your child’s teeth. They offer a better fit than stock versions and are relatively inexpensive. You can find them at most sports equipment retailers.

  • Custom mouthguards: Made by your dentist, these mouthguards are tailored to your child’s unique bite for the best possible fit and protection. Though they cost more, they provide maximum comfort and durability, making them ideal for regular or competitive athletes.

A properly fitted mouthguard can make all the difference in keeping your child’s smile safe. Talk to your dentist to make sure your young athlete is fully equipped for play, on and off the field.
