A Crowning Achievement
When a significant portion of a tooth is lost due to decay, fracture, or wear, the most effective way to restore its strength, function, and appearance is often with a dental crown (also known as a cap). Crowns are typically made from porcelain fused to metal or all-ceramic materials, depending on the location of the tooth and the dentist’s recommendation.
If the damaged tooth is near the front of the mouth, aesthetics become especially important. Our smile plays a powerful role in how we see ourselves and how others see us. It can affect self-confidence, emotional well-being, and even how we interact in social or professional settings. That’s why restoring a front tooth often carries a greater sense of urgency.
The process begins by carefully preparing the tooth, shaping it to ensure there is enough space for the crown to fit securely without affecting your bite (occlusion). This treatment generally requires two appointments, although specific situations may vary.
During the first visit, we fabricate a temporary acrylic crown and place it over the prepared tooth with temporary cement. This protects the tooth and preserves appearance while your final crown is being crafted.
At the second visit, we perform a “try-in” to assess the fit and color of the final crown. We make sure the ceramic blends seamlessly with your natural teeth. Once both the dentist and the patient are satisfied, the crown is permanently cemented or bonded into place.
Call our office if you think you may need a crown. We’ll evaluate your tooth and help determine the best treatment to restore your smile.
