The Right Age To Consider Orthodontics
When it comes to orthodontic care, timing matters. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, children should have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7, or earlier if a parent or dentist notices any signs of concern. While there’s no universal “right” age to begin treatment, early evaluation allows orthodontists to identify problems that may benefit from timely intervention.
Early orthodontic treatment, often called interceptive or phase one treatment, is designed for children between the ages of 6 and 11. During this critical period of growth and development, we can address jaw irregularities and guide facial development in ways that may not be possible once the bones have matured. Early treatment can also prevent minor concerns from becoming more complex and more difficult to treat down the line.
An early diagnosis doesn’t always mean immediate treatment, but it gives us the opportunity to monitor growth and determine the best time to intervene. When treatment is needed early, it can simplify or even eliminate the need for more extensive procedures later, such as tooth extractions or jaw surgery.
